Fantastic food in a fairly relaxed (but still quite formal - does that make sense??) setting.
The food is freshly prepared and always tastes so good.
The staff are always keen to please and always want to hear that you've enjoyed your experience.
The restaurant is always so clean, it's very welcoming.
But the popularity of this restaurant means that it does get busy! I would recommend booking a table if you're planning to visit in the evening.
The drinks are a bit on the pricey side, but with food of this quality, you can live with that.
They also offer a takeaway service, but I have never tried that.

Eat as much as you like buy order of a menu every day,12 quid in the week and the food quality is better than average for this type of menu. Service is a little slow but the crispy duck makes up for it. Lazey susans on the bigger tables. Fun with friends

Following the August Bank Holiday weekend a friend and I were looking for somewhere to eat as neither of us had a chance to grab anything all day. I remembered the wonderful deal I had taken advantage of on a mid week 'Custom Plate' Chinese Banquet at the Shanghai in Gloucester. I took my relatives there some years before and found their system quite unique and very pleasantly memorable. Finding myself once again in their locale I was keen to see if the standard had remained as high.
Welcome and service was first class. Indeed the choices were equally as good as before and a very comprehensive table service menu meant there was something for all tastes. The rule seemed to be the same  that you could order any dishes or side plates you wanted, the only condition was that any significant left-overs could be charged back at full menu price (on top of the fixed buffet tariff). A crispy duck starter and several noodle and rice dishes were the order of the day. Each one as wonderful as the previous and it really did seem that we had struck gold in terms of our choice of venue.
For approx £13 a head (I suspect slightly more at busy weekends), the value and quality more than matched the variety of choices. There were not many empty tables and the atmosphere was pleasantly vibrant. If I have one slight criticism to level it would merely be that the very open plan arrangement of before seems to have been slightly modified to now include a policy of not being able to revert to starter items later on during the service. To me this flexibility was one of the beauties of the former visit and to be fair when I questioned this I was actually courteously allowed to order as I wished. I may suggest that somehow this now needs to be made clearer or better still, left as relaxed as before. There was no pressure to keep re-filling the glasses but due to the length of time we were in the Shanghai, we did sample a small selection of their fine wines and beers. I guess I won't leave it so long next time.

Always great food, but can sometimes be busy meaning you are waiting for service for a while, great for them not so great for customers
